Maratona de Standards

Os denominados "standards" são, na verdade, temas que deixaram de ser apenas mais uma música qualquer para entrar na sua cabeça e nunca mais sair. Os mais "estudados" chamam isso de inconsciente coletivo.

É claro que nessa categoria, na maioria da vezes, estão canções com pelo menos uma década de vida. Quanto mais antiga a música, mais chance de se tornar um standard. As canções com letras levam vantagem nessa história de inconsciente coletivo. Além da melodia, as letras são outro fator que ajuda um ouvinte a lembra de uma canção.

O inquieto pesquisador norte-americano Ted Gioia resolveu meter a mão nessa cumbuca e deu á luz The Jazz Standards: A Guide to the Repertoire , livro com 550 páginas. Em espanhol, o livro foi batizado de El canon del jazz. Los 250 temas imprescindibles. Ele não foi o primeiro e muito menos será o último a eleger os melhores standards. E assim como todas as listas, essa também é questionável.

O livro é um guia sobre 250 temas que, na opinião do autor, são os temas "chicletes" mais importantes do jazz do século XX. É claro que aqui figuram todos os grandes compositores regravados à exaustão. Entre eles estão George e Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irvin Berlim, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, Johnny Mercer, Burt Bacharach, e Harold Arlen. E também estão os standards escritos por músicos de jazz como Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck e Milt Jackson.

A cada nova canção destacada, o autor dá detalhes sobre a composição e conta curiosidades sobre cada uma delas. Outro atrativo é a variedade de dicas de gravações de cada tema, cerca de 20. Ao todo, são mais de 2 mil gravações indicadas. O autor toma o cuidado de indicar tanto gravações tocadas quanto cantadas. Não há preocupação de apontar apenas gravações antigas. Gioia é um ouvinte apurado e curioso, o que faz dele um cara antenado aos novos músicos e suas interpretações de temas próprio e, é claro, de standards.

A música brasileira tem nove representantes nesta seleta lista: "Corcovado", "Desafinado", "Garota de Ipanema", "How Insensitive" "Manhã de Carnaval", "Meditação", "One Note Samba", "O Amor em Paz (Once I Loved)" e "Wave". Não é surpresa que Tom Jobim é o compositor brasileiro mais onipresente no exterior. A invasão da bossa nova nos anos 60 rende frutos até hoje. Das nove canções, oito têm autoria de Jobim. Apenas "Manhã de Carnaval" foi composta por Luiz Bonfá e Antônio Maria, em 1959. A internacionalização deste tema aconteceu por causa do filme Orfeu Negro, que ficou com Oscar de filme estrangeiro.
